Museum Island Celebrates 200 Years of Cultural Heritage

In 2025, Berlin's Museum Island marks a significant milestone—its 200th anniversary. Located in the heart of the city, this UNESCO World Heritage site has been a cornerstone of cultural and artistic development since the foundation of the Altes Museum in 1825. Over the centuries, Museum Island has grown to become one of the world’s most important cultural hubs, housing five renowned museums, each with extraordinary collections spanning thousands of years of history.

The idea of Museum Island began with the vision of King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, who established the Altes Museum as a public institution. It was intended to give citizens access to art and history, making culture more inclusive. Over time, the island evolved to house an extensive collection of artworks and artifacts, contributing to Berlin’s reputation as a cultural capital.

Museum Island is home to five world-class museums, each offering a unique glimpse into the past:

*Pergamon Museum* - Famous for its ancient Middle Eastern art and monumental architectural reconstructions, including the Pergamon Altar. (until 2027 Pergamon museum is closed)
